Do you Lie about yourself?
We’ve all heard the dating horror stories about dates from an internet dating website. Whether it’s Match.com, eHarmony or one of many other sites, people lie on their profiles! It could be an inaccurate photo, a listing of activities they say they do when they really don’t, their age, their weight, their job/salary, you name it, people lie about it.
It’s Just a Little White Lie.
So let’s say it’s just a little white lie, something you think won’t matter. For example, you say you are 34 when really you are 38 or that you are 55 when you are really 62. No big deal right? We all lied about being 21 when we were only 19, what’s the difference? He or she won’t go out with me if they know my real age and I can pull it off, I really do look younger than I am. OK, probably pretty true. But is this starting out a potential relationship on the wrong foot?
When to Tell the Truth.
In some cases the truth is immediately apparent - the person looks nothing like their picture. But when it comes to age, when do you tell the truth? There are several options here. You might never tell the truth and apologize when they do find out, because they will find out. Or do you tell them on the first date? After they are head over heels in love with you? Somewhere in between? Each choice has its own pluses and minuses.
My Advice.
Just don’t lie, at all. Really, why bother? It will cause you stress worrying about when and how to tell the truth and worst case scenario it could be a deal breaker for the person you just met. Not to mention what it says about you – I’m desperate and willing to lie to get what I’m looking for. However, if you do choose to lie, fess up quickly and early on, be honest, apologize and hopefully move on. What has been your experience? Have you lied and then told the truth? When did you fess up and how did it work out for you?
